I Am A Feminist

I am a feminist, in the social movement sense of the word. Additionally, I use elements of the feminist theoretical style in my psychotherapy practice.

I was so moved by the actions of women in America (and around the globe) this last weekend. Strong messages. Powerful scenes. No violence. (Let’s put politics aside – the message I am endorsing here is female strength, body ownership, equal recognition and seats at the table.  Women’s rights are human rights. Regardless of geography, ethnicity, religion, orientation or affiliation – all of us are, know, or love women.)

To see women embracing their power, their numbers, their voices in such a way is really a macro level of what I (hope) to accomplish with my patients on an individual basis. No, I did not march. No, I am not active in politics. But, I aim to inspire women to assert their strength in life and relationships through our conversations in the therapy setting.

So, I remind myself (and you, the reader) that we can all find a way to be a voice for change – through our actions and commentary on the individual and the global scale.

“Like a small boat, on the ocean, sending big waves, into motion” – Rachel Platten
