Let’s Talk About Gut Health. Sort Of

Trust your gut.

I love this phrase, but some women take it too far in one direction or the other. I’ve had some patients “trust their gut” despite overwhelming facts to the contrary. And then I’ve had patients tell tales where their gut screamed, and they harbor painful regret at ignoring it.

So here’s what I propose: Learn your gut.  Track your gut. Record what your gut tells you and write it down before any events occur. Then after the fact, see what happened and make a mental note – “was my gut right?” We often misremember things and may inadvertently give too much or too little power to our gut, leaving her frustrated, and thinking “that’s not what I was saying?!”

Let’s discover when and where to listen to your gut. In what situations is your intuition correct? And on the other hand, when are you feeling “triggered” with your emotions disproportionate.

Triggers are often discredited as emotions gone awry. But, your female intuition is, at times, a very raw, unconscious warning signal. Feelings come from some basis of truth. The bestselling book “Blink” by Gladwell notes a great deal of research showing where our brain (or gut) perceives truths that our conscious mind cannot quite make sense of. Let’s personalize that to you and learn what the emotions mean? Triggers are not bad.  However, misreading them is where trouble happens.

So by this method, we’ll use logic and science to quantify emotion and feelings. Here’s where we find that balance – track the gut, notate the right/wrong outcomes, then use that data. And now we know how to ride the waves of your emotions.

Cheers! To better gut health. And learning what she’s been telling you all this time.
